How to Read a Window and Door Quote
What a complete quote should list, and what to ask before you sign.
Every opening on its own line
A good quote lists each window and door separately, keyed to the marks on your plans (W01, W02, D01 and so on). If everything is rolled into one number, you can't check it against the drawings, compare suppliers fairly, or spot a missing unit before it becomes a delay.
What each line should specify
Product type and operation: casement, awning, sliding, fixed, bi-fold, entry.
Size: unit or rough-opening width × height, and which one the quote uses.
Frame material and color, inside and out.
Glass package: insulated, Low-E, and tempered, laminated, or impact glass where your project requires it.
Door handing and swing: left or right, in-swing or out-swing.
Hardware finish, screens, and grilles.
Quantity.
What's included, and what isn't
Ask directly about delivery, installation, flashing and trim, packaging removal, and anything marked "by others." Two quotes can look far apart simply because one includes items the other leaves out.
Documents for your project
Ask for product data sheets and any ratings your project needs, such as energy performance, wind load, or impact resistance. Your local building department sets the requirements; your architect or contractor can confirm which apply to your address.
Lead time and changes
Confirm the lead time and when it starts (usually after final approval), and how changes are handled once an order is placed. Getting this in writing protects your schedule.
